Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has admitted he was close to joining Manchester United before he moved to the Allianz Arena.
Former Barcelona man Thiago was strongly linked with a move to Man United when David Moyes took charge of the club but a deal never materialised.
Various rumours have suggested Moyes was unconvinced that the player could handle himself in the Premier League.
Thiago confirmed a move to United was a possibility at one stage, as was staying at Barcelona if Pep Guardiola remained at the club.
When asked if he was close to joining United, Thiago said: “Yes, but the real possibility was Bayern.
“[On Barcelona stay] Yes, probably, but I can’t change the past and I prefer to focus on now. You learn something new every day with Pep, a magnificent coach who transmits real passion.”
The Spaniard suffered a serious injury during his first season at Bayern but he has flourished since making his return this term.
Thinking about the saga will bring up bad memories for United fans as it looked like his signature was all but secured before the transfer was suddenly called off. It was the first of many ifs and buts when it came to Moyes’ failed spell in charge of the club.
