Louis van Gaal has made it clear he intends to sign a defensive midfielder for Manchester United during the summer.
Michael Carrick was fantastic in that position when he was fit but injuries kept him out for so much of the season and Man United really struggled to replace him.
Daley Blind did well at the start of the year but continued injuries to Luke Shaw meant he had to fill in at left-back and either Ander Herrera or even Wayne Rooney had to fill in as a defensive midfielder.
No.6 is a key player, yes. I have more key roles – the no.6 is just one of those key roles. You have seen this season, for example, because Michael Carrick is injured and I don’t have another, I have to play with Ander Herrera there. He did it very well, but it is not his speciality.
“I have played Wayne Rooney there also, but it is not his favoured position. I had to do this because I don’t have another right-footed holding midfielder like Carrick. That is why it is a key role, but I cannot discuss other positions because then I show too much.”
Ilkay Gundogan, Paul Pogba, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arturo Vidal and many more defensive midfielders have already been linked with moves to Old Trafford, so there are no clues as to who he will sign.
Van Gaal is a manager who knows exactly what he wants, that much is obvious, and he will waste no time in trying to solve that problem as soon as the season is over.
When injuries didn’t savage it, United’s team was very strong this year and the six game winning streak including victories over Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur was indicative of that.
However, it needs to be strengthened if United are going to be able to challenge on all fronts next season and Van Gaal has every intention of doing just that.
