Former Manchester United star Park Ji-Sung believes new signing Memphis Depay can be as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.
Depay agreed a deal to join United from PSV Eindhoven earlier this month after PSG had threatened de-rail United’s plans to bring him to England.
The 21-year-old will follow in the footsteps of Park, the last player to make the move from PSV to Old Trafford, and the former South Korea player believes Depay has the potential to light up the Premier League.
“He’s still a young player – only 21 years old – but I played with him and he has so much potential: he has strength, passing ability and skill,” Park told MUTV.
Ronaldo himself went on to make himself a world superstar after arriving from Sporting Lisbon back in 2003. Whilst Ronaldo was one of a few who went on to reach full potential, Depay will be wary of others who came in with the ‘next Ronaldo’ tag, such as Nani.
“Some people say he’s like Cristiano Ronaldo and I can imagine that – he really has the desire to be the best player and United can help him achieve that. It’s a really good signing for both him and the club, and I’m sure he’ll show his quality for us.”
On first viewing, Depay looks to be everything Ronaldo was. Fast, powerful, tricky and a real eye for goal, but supporters will need to be patient given his age and the huge step up he’ll be taking from Eredivisie to Premier League.
