Manchester United have agreed a deal to bring highly-rated 16-year-old centre back Dayot Upamecano to the club from Valenciennes.
The Ligue 2 club have struggled near the bottom of the league this year, but Upamecano has shone in the youth teams for both his club and his country.
It’s believed United beat both local rivals Manchester City and Arsenal to his signing, despite the fact it appeared the defender would go to North London a few months ago.
The fee for Upacemano is believed to be just below the half a million mark and he will be the third arrival of the summer at Old Trafford already.
Memphis Depay agreed to join the club for a much heftier fee before the season ended, whilst young goalkeeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui also agreed a deal to join the club’s youth ranks earlier this month.
Upamecano joins a long list of impressive young defenders at the club, with Axel Tuanzebe receiving several plaudits in recent months, and Timothy Fosu-Mensah progressing steadily to reserve team football despite only arriving at the club last summer.
Whilst much more money is expected to be spent on first team recruitment, it’s evident Louis van Gaal is looking to the future, despite having just two years left on his contract.
