Cleverley: I enjoyed training with Herrera and Mata

Tom Cleverley has revealed the thrill he received from training with Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.

The midfielder was involved in Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the US and featured in a 1-1 draw away to Sunderland before going on loan to Aston Villa.

The arrival of Herrera and Mata in 2014 bolstered Man United’s technical ability in the middle of the park and finally gave the club some genuine strength in midfield after years of being underwhelming in that department.

In a recent interview, Cleverley recalled how he enjoyed the added Spanish influence in midfield during his short time at United under Louis van Gaal.

“I learn from watching Barcelona,” he said.

“I like that style. I like the theory of possession. I enjoy playing in training with people like Juan Mata and Ander Herrera at United.”

While training with these two would obviously left an impression on Cleverley, it was probably their presence which led to him being pushed away from Old Trafford in the summer.

Now at Villa, the 25-year-old has somewhat rediscovered his confidence and has become a more influential player for the Midlands club as the season has gone on.

That being said, Cleverley is never likely to have the same level of quality which make Herrera and Mata such wonderful players but at Villa, he looks to have found his level.
