Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder Bernard Mensah made his debut for Ghana last night and got off to the best possible start with a superb goal.
The 20-year-old’s strike proved to be enough for Ghana in their 1-0 win over Togo and put him firmly in the spotlight once again, not that he needed the extra attention.
Mensah has already confirmed that Manchester United want to sign him and have started negotiations with his club over a potential transfer, so he’s already on the radar of Louis van Gaal..
Now, reports from Ghana say United had scouts present last night to watch him in action again having also followed his progress first hand in Portugal this year.
Mensah played very well on his debut and earned praise from Ghana boss and ex-Chelsea manager Avram Grant.
“I’m happy with Mensah’s performance especially with his goal and he is a very good player,” Grant said.
“The match was a good experience for my team and we are satisfied with the outcome of match.
“Mensah is one of the players I have been monitoring over the last three months and I can promise you he won’t be the last one.”
At 20, Mensah wouldn’t come straight into United’s first-team immediately but if he is good enough then Van Gaal wouldn’t hesitate to give him opportunities.
As is the case with talented youngsters, United are not the only team being linked with him as Valencia, PSG, Monaco and Juventus have all been mentioned but there is no confirmed interest just yet.
If Mensah does join, then Van Gaal may want him to come on the pre-season tour so if that is the case then he only has roughly five weeks to get a deal done in time.
