Manchester United are on the verge of signing Torino right-back Matteo Darmian but not many fans know too much about him given that he plays in the Serie A.
With that in mind, we had a chat with Omid Zamani to find out more about the 25-year-old who’ll be calling Old Trafford home next season.
Omid, how excited should Manchester United fans be about signing Matteo Darmian?
Many are unaware of how good a signing Darmian really is. The reality is that Darmian has shown himself to be one of the most complete full-backs in world football, so we can safely say that Darmian would be a superb signing for Manchester United. He will be a pleasant surprise for United’s supporters.
How did Darmian get on last season with Torino? Did he improve as a player over the 12 months?
Darmian was Italy’s best player last World Cup. In early 2015, he was awarded with the Pallone Azzurro as the best player of the national team for 2014 and has easily been best player for the Italian national team in past 12 months.
He was also by far and away Torino’s best player last season and has been incredibly consistent for both club and country.
At €20m, Darmian is relatively cheap when it comes to a United signing. Are we getting a real bargain?
As I said it before, to me €20 million is a steal for one of Europe’s best fullbacks and also one of the best players in all of Serie A. It’s a superb piece of business from Man United and Ed Woodward.
“Darmian is two-footed and can play at either left or right-back in a back four, has played at centre-back in a back three and as a wing-back in a five man defence. He’s extremely versatile.”
What do you feel is Darmian’s strongest asset as a player and if he has any weaknesses, what are they?
The greatest strength of Italian defenders is they know how to defend which was a problem for Man United defenders last season.
Darmian is very quick, solid in the air and is defensively excellent. His pace and skill in a one-on-one situation means he is very rarely beaten.
Attacking wise, he’s very good at beating his man and getting into great crossing positions. That being said, his crosses can be improved.
How good is Darmian at playing the full-back role in terms of getting forward to attack but also getting straight back into defence?
Darmian is the type of player Louis van Gaal will love as he can operate both as a full-back and a wing-back on either flank. Plus the fact that Darmian is two-footed, can play either left or right in a back four, has played centre-back in a back three and as a wing-back in a five man defence. He’s extremely versatile.
