United’s player of the season for the past two years has been involved in a transfer saga with Madrid throughout the summer and it seems that talks have stalled between the two clubs.
However, should De Gea eventually join Los Blancos, United may turn to Oblak.
De Gea himself joined United from Atletico in 2011 and Oblak could follow in his footsteps.
The Slovenian is far from the finished article in goal but, at 22, he represents a good long-term option for United. He reportedly has a €45m release clause in his current contract.
However, as fans have seen with Nicolas Otamendi, a release clause does not necessarily make a transfer easier. If United do not feel the release clause meets their valuation of the player, negotiations would have to take place between the two clubs in order to sort out a deal.
Of course, United supporters will be hoping this isn’t necessary and that De Gea commits himself to United.
