Louis van Gaal happy with threat of Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay

Louis van Gaal is happy with the growing relationship between Memphis Depay and Wayne Rooney at Manchester United

Both players look to have built a good understanding during Man United’s tour of the US, with the duo contributing impressive performances against the likes of FC Barcelona along the way.

Van Gaal praised both for how they have got on so far in this pre-season but did say he felt their partnership would only really blossom when United start to place a bigger emphasis on playing down the wings.

He said: “Yes I think they try to do their utmost best to look for each other and sometimes I think too much.

“It should be better when we have a wider orientation, but I think they were always a threat and that is very important.

“I think Barcelona could not cope with the threat of Depay and Rooney, but I have to say that Adnan Januzaj was also a big threat for them in the 30 minutes that he played as a striker. That is good to see.”

Depay joined Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven in June, following a prolific season in the Eredivisie which also saw PSV win the league title, and has started off strongly at United.

United fans will be happy to see Depay and Rooney forming the beginnings of a potentially formidable partnership throughout United’s pre-season tour, as creativity was often a weak spot at times for United last season.

Having scored 22 goals in 30 league appearances last term, supporters will hope that the 21-year-old can replicate that in front of goal which could prove to be crucial in any title hunt for Van Gaal’s side.

One question that remains however, is where Memphis will be deployed. Having played and excelled as a left inside-forward at PSV, many fans were surprised to see the Dutch international feature in the no.10 role behind Rooney.

Regardless of his position, Memphis has so far represented a versatile and scary outlet for United and looks to be a player that could take the Premier League by storm.
