Louis van Gaal: Jesse Lingard was ‘very good’ against Barcelona

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Jesse Lingard played “very well” against Barcelona on Saturday.

Lingard came off the substitute’s bench against Barcelona on the hour mark and scored just minutes later before setting up Adnan Januzaj’s strike at the death as Man United secured a 3-1 win.

It was an encouraging performance from Lingard, who went through a tough time last season after suffering a serious injury during the first half of the campaign.

Van Gaal praised the Englishman for his display but also warned him that he must do more when tracking back.

“He scored and had an assist so did very well. Could have done better sometimes in defence but he played very well,” he said.

Van Gaal is notoriously difficult to please so for him to praise Lingard goes to show just how well he did against Barcelona.

The 22-year-old started in United’s first Premier League game against Swansea last season but an injury suffered during the game kept him out for the majority of the campaign. After spending some time at Derby County on loan, Lingard is now ready to make an impact at Old Trafford.
