Rio Ferdinand urges John Stones to choose Manchester United over Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand has urged Everton central defender John Stones to join Manchester United ahead of Chelsea this summer.

The 21-year-old is considered one of the best young defenders in the Premier League and has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park for most of the summer. Chelsea have been mentioned as a possible destination but Ferdinand is not convinced that the youngster should move to a team where his development could be hindered.

Man United are in desperate need of a central defender and Stones could well be on the club’s radar.

If rumours of United’s interest in Stones are true, Ferdinand is in little doubt as to where the England international should move.

“I reckon Man United should buy John Stones. You’re buying someone who’s going to give you 10 years’ service. It’s a no-brainer. The price is expensive, but he is English and a great prospect,” he said.

“He is at that stage of his career where he needs to play games and I reckon he would be picked every week if he joined United.

“I don’t think he would play every week if he went to Chelsea, so United is the right club for him.”

United have upgraded several positions this summer and have created the kind of team and squad that could challenge for honours in every competition.

However, there is still a real concern regarding the centre-back position at United. Injuries and lack of consistency have plagued the position for United in recent years. If the season started today, it would appear that Daley Blind and Chris Smalling or Phil Jones would start at the heart of the defence.

Blind lacks cutting edge speed and Smalling and Jones have both struggled with injuries and inconsistency. There are options further down the squad list in the shape of youngsters Tyler Blackett, Paddy McNair and Marcos Rojo but the need for a leader and consistent defender is obvious. Stones can be a rock at the back for United for a very long time and Ferdinand speaks the truth when he says that the youngster would start immediately for United.
