Jasper Cillessen free to play in Champions League next season following Ajax elimination

Rumoured Manchester United target Jasper Cillessen will be free to play in the Champions League next season after current club Ajax were knocked out of the competition by Rapid Vienna.

There were rumours that Cillessen may miss the tie due to injury but he ended up playing in both legs.

Ajax eventually crashed out of the Champions League 5-4 on aggregate following a 3-2 home defeat on Tuesday.

The result means that Cillessen will be free to play in Europe for Man United should he replace David de Gea, who has been the subject of strong interest from Real Madrid.

Cillessen has divided opinion amongst fans, with some feeling that he is not quite good enough to play for United.

However, others say that they have faith in Louis van Gaal and goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek.

Whatever happens, the saga involving De Gea and his potential replacement will drag on right up until the window shuts. The reports surrounding his future have died down in recent days and the hope is that it is not the calm before the storm.
