From Spain: Nicolas Otamendi has arrived in Manchester

As we discussed yesterday in a little bit of detail, we’re finding it very strange that Manchester United have shown no active interest in signing Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi.

The official line from the club is that there has never been any interest in bringing Otamendi to Old Trafford, despite the fact centre-back has, and still remains, one of the biggest weak points in the squad.

Now, reports from Spain say Otamendi has arrived in Manchester ahead of completing a move to Manchester City and that Valencia are convinced of getting Mangala in return.

Eliaquim Mangala is being linked with a loan move in the opposite direction and after the shocking season he had last year, Man City may well be looking to swap him out for Otamendi.

If Man United willingly let City sign Otamendi when he is the perfect player to solve a lot of our own issues, then that could be a grave mistake.

Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward have been extremely smart in the transfer window so far but from an objective view, the concept of letting a top class defender join their closest rivals would be foolish.

For all of United’s great work in the transfer window, it could all come crashing down to earth with a couple of injuries in defence and that’s such a precarious position to be in.
