Louis van Gaal signed the Argentine as a form of insurance and security amidst the murkiness of the De Gea saga. Romero has taken the 24-year-old’s place in the starting XI so far this term as De Gea is not said to be in the right frame of mind thanks to the attention from Madrid.
The Dutchman will only consider using De Gea again once the transfer window shuts.
Despite the speculation, Romero has made it clear that he wants the Spaniard to stay at Old Trafford.
“For me, I hope that De Gea stays here because I am learning a lot from him and he’s a great teammate,” Romero said.
“It’s surprising that [Victor] Valdes and De Gea aren’t playing, both have won everything and are great professionals.”
The battle between Man United and Madrid over De Gea has petered out since Madrid tied down Sergio Ramos to a long-term deal.
Numerous reports claimed De Gea would only be sold if Ramos came the other way. It would have been a fair swap but most United fans would rather De Gea see out the remainder of his contract, which expires at the end of this season.
