Manchester City complete Nicolas Otamendi deal

Manchester City have completed the signing of Nicolas Otamendi for a reported fee in the region of £34m.

The Argentine had been linked with a move to Manchester United all summer but recent reports suggest Louis van Gaal was never interested in him.

City have instead made their move for Otamendi, who will compete with Eliaquim Mangala for a place in the starting XI.

It is disappointing news for United but fans will be encouraged by the form shown by Chris Smalling early on in the campaign.

It looks like van Gaal is happy with Daley Blind’s contribution at centre-back, although there is a question mark over whether or not the Dutchman is good enough to provide defensive stability all season long.

United have also missed out on signing Barcelona forward Pedro and it is unclear who they are actually targeting as the transfer window draws to a close. If van Gaal fails to add to his squad then a Premier League title challenge may be out of reach.
