Louis van Gaal urges Manchester United to be more clinical following PSV Eindhoven defeat

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has urged his side to be more clinical following the 2-1 defeat against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday night.

Memphis Depay scored a wonderful opening goal against the Dutch side but PSV eventually went in front before Juan Mata and Anthony Martial squandered chances as the game drew to a close.

It was a frustrating result and it was clear that van Gaal was irritated with what he saw.

“When you are you 1-0 up, if you score the second goal it is over. That is what has happened tonight. We can only blame ourselves because we have created so many chances. After Tottenham Hotspur, I said we have to score one more than the opponent,” he said.

“Today we could have scored much more but it is always like that. You have to be effective and PSV were very effective because they scored out of nothing. A deviated ball from a corner kick and another finish after a passing error in the first phase. They scored and that is professional, it is very good.”

Martial, Mata, Ashley Young and Memphis linked up well and showed some promising signs of developing an understanding with each other but they couldn’t find the goal that United needed to get back into the match.

It is worrying that United still look underwhelming going forward and they will need to do much better when they face Southampton in the Premier League in their next game.
