Manchester United’s Joe Rothwell may need surgery to remove tonsils

Manchester United youngster Joe Rothell may be forced to have surgery in order to remove his tonsils.

The midfielder, currently on loan at Barnsley, has been battling with tonsillitis but faces four weeks on the sidelines if he has to undergo surgery.

Prior to his illness, Rothwell had made four starts and three substitute appearances so was getting plenty of game time with Barnsley, so it’s a real shame to hear the news that he could have his tonsils removed.

Speaking about Rothwell, Barnsley head coach Lee Johnson said: “Joe Rothwell has been ill with tonsillitis. At the moment he is fighting through it but he may have to have his tonsils taken out so we may lose him for a month or so.”

Rothwell’s a cracking academy prospect and like Ben Pearson he was making a good impression out on loan at Barnsley this season, so we’re hoping he’s able to overcome this hurdle and hopefully avoid surgery.

The cruel aspect of this is that back in September, Rothwell suffered from a separate bout of tonsillitis so this is a repeating problem. In that sense, surgery may well be the only answer so as to avoid any further incidents.
