Juan Mata admits Manchester United must be ‘more efficient’ when finishing chances

Juan Mata knows Manchester United must be more efficient in future, following three consecutive 0-0 draws, one of which saw United knocked out of the Capital One Cup.

Having been humiliated 4-0 by MK Dons last year in the Capital One Cup, United were looking to win it but Middlesbrough beat the Reds on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. Three days earlier, Manchester City had held United at Old Trafford too, leaving with a point after a goalless 90 minutes.

On Saturday, Crystal Palace made it more than 300 minutes without a goal for Manchester United in another 0-0 draw. Mata says that United must be more efficient, taking chances when they come instead of wasting them to be left with an embarrassing loss or draw.

In his weekly blog on Kicca, Mata said, “The first draw in the Capital One Cup was the worst one because it was followed by a defeat in the penalty shootout.

“Against Middlesbrough, it was one of those games where the team visiting Old Trafford tries to defend well, obstruct our game and rely on any chance they may have to score.

“It worked well for them because they took the game to the penalties and they were better than us in the shootout. We had some chances, especially in the last few minutes, but we know we must be more efficient and accurate when making and finishing our plays.”

Mata is certainly right. Against Manchester City, United had six shots but just one on target while against Palace had three chances and again just one shot on target.

It is not just down to Wayne Rooney‘s poor form, too. Ander Herrera missed a great chance against Crystal Palace while others are seeing the shots they do hit on target be caught easily by the goalkeeper. It must improve, and hopefully it does against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League.
