Juan Mata acknowledges that Manchester United must get better at creating chances

Juan Mata knows his Manchester United teammates must improve the amount of chances they make each game if they are going to bounce back from a recent lack of goals.

The Spanish midfielder has been one of the most important players in the United side this season, scoring five times and assisting a further four already this season. However, along with his teammates, he is in a dry patch having not played a part in any goal since September.

Man United have now gone more than five hours without scoring and have got three consecutive 0-0 draws for the first time since 2005. Not only that but the Reds have created very few chances from which to score from. Against Crystal Palace, FourFourTwo Stats Zone say United had no big chances in the game while against City, Louis van Gaal‘s side had none too.

Mata feels United must create more in games if they are to return to scoring multiple times a game, of which they did do in September, scoring 12 goals in four games.

“The draw in the Premier League against Crystal Palace was different [to the draw with Middlesbrough].” Mata wrote in his weekly blog post on Kicca.

“They are a team that knows how to play their cards. They did good pressing at the start to complicate our moves, and they created some chances especially in the first few minutes. My feeling was that, after a difficult start, we were getting more and more into the game, finding spaces between the lines and controlling it by half time.

“Yet at the start of the second half they did good pressing again and played long balls that put us in some trouble. We weren’t able to create good chances. We need to get better in that aspect of the game because I think we have the players to do that. I’m sure that the goals will come soon and, with them, the good results.”

The Reds face CSKA Moscow at home in the fourth group game of the UEFA Champions League game and will be hoping to get back to scoring ways on Tuesday night. Anthony Martial scored in the first fixture between these two sides in Moscow a few weeks ago in a 1-1 draw.
