Both players were substituted with injuries against Watford and Man United have a string of first-team players who are sidelined with injury at the moment – that problem is continuing to get worse.
Speaking after the Watford match, van Gaal said: “We are in a lousy period for injuries. We have a lot of injuries. We have a big problem and now Jones and Herrera are not available I think for Wednesday.
“The first impression is that they are not heavy injuries but they probably cannot play Wednesday. Jones has a twisted ankle and Herrera maybe a hamstring injury.”
Herrera’s injury is particularly concerning because he went down holding his hamstring after no apparent challenge, which usually indicates a tear or strain of some sort. As for Jones, he reportedly twisted his ankle but the severity of that is also unknown.
Either way, for United’s crucial Champions League qualifier against PSV on Wednesday, van Gaal will have to cope without Herrera and Jones. Hopefully Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney are fit to return but it’s still a blow for us to have so many first-team players out of action at the moment.
