Louis van Gaal reveals Bastian Schweinsteiger had an extra recovery day

Louis van Gaal has revealed Bastian Schweinsteiger was absent from training ahead of Manchester United’s game against PSV because he needed a recovery day.

The 31-year-old was really influential in Man United’s 2-1 win over Watford at the weekend and with both Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick out due to injuries, we don’t have many fit central midfielders.

Although Schweinsteiger did need an extra rest day, van Gaal insists it doesn’t mean he is ruled out of Wednesday night’s game.

“He needed a recovery day but that doesn’t mean he can’t play [against PSV],” van Gaal told reporters on Tuesday.

In all honesty, I don’t expect Schweinsteiger to start against PSV simply because of his age and the fact he does need a bit longer to recover.

Schweinsteiger needs to manage his fitness and if that means missing a game in order to avoid injuries then it is the smart thing to do.

Without him in the side, United still have Morgan Schneiderlin to boss the midfield but it does leave us with limited options and an injury to Schneiderlin would create a bit of a crisis in that position.
