Manchester United youth getting great chances under Louis van Gaal

Manchester United’s 19-man squad for Wolfsburg contained plenty of youngsters thanks to an injury problem at the club creating opportunities for them.

Nick Powell, 21, was included in a senior match-day squad for the first time in over ten months and it really is great to see him getting closer to first-team football again.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, 18, and Paddy McNair, 20, also travelled as did Jesse Lingard and Guillermo Varela who are both 22.

Yes, there is a worrying lack of match-winning quality in our team to face Wolfsburg but when you have as many injuries as we do with such a small squad, that’s when you give youngsters the opportunity.

Sir Alex Ferguson was the king of managing a squad stacked of seasoned professionals who all wanted game time. Rotation was his tool to keep those players happy.

On the other hand, Louis van Gaal chooses to maintain a smaller squad and promote the youth and I’m definitely not adverse to that. After all, who’s to say Powell won’t come and score the winner?
