Chelsea will make a £40m bid for Manchester United transfer target John Stones when the January transfer window opens, according to the Daily Express.
Jose Mourinho attempted to buy the Everton defender last summer but was rejected by Roberto Martinez despite submitting multiple bids.
Louis van Gaal was reportedly interested in the Englishman as the manager looked to improve his defence but nothing materialised, although it hasn’t stopped us continuing to be linked.
Everton stood firm in the summer by rejecting every approach from Chelsea, so if he does leave the club next summer it will only be on their terms but the fact he’s a local lad makes it harder for anybody trying to sign him.
From United’s perspective, we’re all consciously aware that we need another top class centre-back and there aren’t many better prospects who are already established at the top level like Stones is.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we were ready to try and barter a deal involving both Stones, Wayne Rooney and some cash but with Chelsea likely to come back in strong after their car crash of a season, there’ll be plenty of competition for his signature.
