Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara has revealed how David de Gea tried to persuade him to join Manchester United.
Thiago was heavily linked with a move to Man United during David Moyes’ first season in charge of the club but he eventually left Barcelona for Bayern.
The Spaniard has emerged as a key figure for the Bundesliga side after recovering from two serious knee injuries. Thiago insisted that he was always going to join Bayern.
“There was never any firm proposal [from United],” Thiago said.
“David De Gea wanted me to join. He wrote a message on my match ball after we’d beaten Italy in the [European Under-21 Championship] final. But I’d have done the same with him. He is one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world. You always want to play with the best. But it was always going to be Munich.”
Thiago is just one of a number of ‘what ifs’ as far as United are concerned.
The likes of Toni Kroos, Gareth Bale, Lucas Moura and Eden Hazard have also reportedly come close to moving to Old Trafford only for other teams to swoop in. United have failed in terms of their transfer policy in recent years and the team has suffered as a result, as the current injury crisis shows. They will need to be much better in the January transfer window and beyond.
