Diego Forlan insists that Manchester United need to sign more strikers in the coming transfer windows.
Louis van Gaal has Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney available at the club after offloading Javier Hernandez and Robin van Persie in the summer transfer window, and recently allowing James Wilson to go on loan at Brighton.
The 36-year-old feels Man United captain Rooney doesn’t have what it takes to be their sole striker as he gets older.
“In my opinion I think they need to have more strikers. Rooney is a great player but he is getting older and is playing in every position. He can’t play every game,” Forlan said.
Forlan is spot on and I think there’s a real chance that Rooney could leave United this summer and return to Everton. If he does, then we’ve got an even bigger need to bring in more than one top quality striker if we are to compete for trophies next season.
If our finishing had been better this year, we’d have scored a bucketload more goals because although the chances haven’t been flowing like a river, there’s been countless times when poor finishing has let us down in the final third.
More strikers won’t solve all of United’s problems but it will go some way to giving the squad the sort of strength it needs to compete on all fronts.
