Manchester United are close to signing FC Mainz striker Yoshinori Muto for £12 million, reports The Mirror.

The 23-year-old’s name has never once been mentioned with Man United anywhere else but Steve Bates says Louis van Gaal has been tracking Muto for some time now in the Bundesliga, where he has scored seven goals in 16 appearances according to WhoScored.

Bates quotes that German sources discuss the deal being on the table but we’ve yet to see anything in Bild.de or Kicker.de, so it would be strange to hear a deal for Muto is close to being completed but Bates is reporting to the contrary.

I don’t think any United fan is under any illusion that we need some extra firepower up front. Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney just aren’t providing enough threat in attack but whether that will see Muto coming in remains to be seen.

We don’t know much about Muto as a player so we’ll be doing some research at the start of next week where we will be getting some expert insight on him.
