Wayne Rooney divides opinion among Manchester United fans following performance against Sheffield United

Wayne Rooney scored the winner as Manchester United laboured to a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Rooney scored a 93rd minute penalty to ensure Man United’s progress to the fourth round but the performance left plenty to be desired. United could only muster two shots on target against League One opposition, a statistic that proves that all is not well at Old Trafford. Fans were understandably frustrated at the lack of goalmouth action and many felt that Rooney is at the centre of the problem.

The skipper continues to divide opinion amongst the supporters, with many appreciating the effort he puts in on the pitch. However, it is obvious that he struggles to make as much of an impact on games now as he did a few years ago and there is still debate over what his best position is in Louis van Gaal‘s system.

There have been plenty of calls for England’s record goalscorer to be dropped from United’s team altogether, but his involvement against Sheffield United, no matter how minimal, was a decisive one which took the Reds through the third round. However, his overall display showed that he does not offer enough going forward and can sometimes be detrimental to the side’s forward play.

Van Gaal is clearly a big fan of his captain and his bias makes it seem as if Rooney is almost undroppable in the current squad. The skipper’s goal could paper over the cracks in his game recently but United fans are not in unison when singing his praises.
