Manchester United’s strongest XI vs Southampton: Cameron Borthwick-Jackson at left-back

Louis van Gaal will have to shake-up Manchester United’s back four yet again following the news that Ashley Young will be out of action for a “long time” with a severe groin injury.

Young’s absence will likely mean that Matteo Darmian switches over to the right flank, leaving Cameron Borthwick-Jackson to occupy the left-back slot.

Borthwick-Jackson performed well against Liverpool last time out and his rapid progression into the first team should continue against Southampton on Saturday:

Elsewhere, Marouane Fellaini will likely line up in the middle of the park once again as Bastian Schweinsteiger is still out injured.

Fellaini provided the pivotal assist for Wayne Rooney’s winner against Liverpool but he was otherwise ineffectual in a deep midfield role.

The other option would be to move Ander Herrera deeper but the Spaniard has proven to be far more dangerous at No.10. It is crucial that United build up a head of steam after the result against Liverpool but they will have to do it with a threadbare squad.
