Backpages: Power struggle over Jose Mourinho becoming Manchester United manager

We take a look at today’s newspaper back-pages in the British press.

Undoubtedly, The Sunday World’s leading story is the biggest talking point as they report that there is a power struggle in Manchester United’s board of directors over Jose Mourinho.

Some want the ex-Chelsea manager to take over from Louis van Gaal but others, Sir Bobby Charlton is named, don’t want him to take over. The fans are split over Mourinho, so it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that there are disagreements at board level as well and this isn’t the first time we’ve heard these rumours.

Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney has come to van Gaal’s defence and said the players must be blamed for what they do on the pitch.

As well as that, a worrying piece in the Express suggests United’s academy has suffered from cuts by the Glazers as part of a club wide campaign by the American owners to reduce overall costs by 15%. With so much money coming in from new television deals, why would cuts be necessary?
