Representatives of Barcelona and Mata have reportedly made initial contact in recent months.
Intermediaries met in Spain but discussions have not progressed beyond that point. Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is keen to relieve the pressure on Andres Iniesta and provide competition for Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi with the addition of Mata but the 27-year-old is happy in Manchester.
However, as with various members of Man United’s dressing room, Mata harbours reservations regarding the long-term vision of the club, with the more creative players in the squad feeling restricted under Louis van Gaal.
Barcelona explored the possibility of a move eighteen months ago but it was considered unfeasible at the time as Mata had only just joined United.
Mata has endeared himself to fans during his time at Old Trafford but you get the sense that he needs to be doing more considering his price tag and the fact that he is entering the peak of his career. The Spaniard scored against Derby last time out but has found himself on the substitute’s bench in recent weeks.
