Dani Alves has urged Barcelona teammate Neymar to sign a new contract at the Nou Camp amid rumoured interest from Manchester United.
Neymar has been locked in contract negotiations at Barcelona for a number of weeks but a deal has not yet been forthcoming.
The player’s father, who is also his agent, recently claimed that Man United had made a £145m offer for Neymar last summer which was rejected. Alves believes Neymar is the heir to Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
“No one is able to do the things he can. When he was thinking about going to play somewhere else, I told him to look back in time at the other Brazilians who have played here, whether they’d been successful here or not, and how they had subsequently got on at other clubs,” Alves said.
“[Barcelona] must give him a new deal, they’d be mad not to. Neymar will be the one to succeed [Lionel] Messi.”
It appears that Barcelona have ordered their players to launch a charm offensive towards Neymar, with Luis Suarez also coming out in support of the Brazilian this week.
If he really wanted to stay at the Nou Camp, you would have thought he would have signed a new deal by now. That being said, perhaps the rumours of a United bid and the delay in negotiations are just tactics to raise the player’s salary. It wouldn’t be the first time that United have been used in such a way, with Thomas Muller also flirting with a move before signing a new deal at Bayern Munich last year.
