Roberto Martinez has been so impressed by Tom Cleverley since he joined Everton that he has labelled him one of the most sensational free transfers in Premier League history.
Cleverley, 26, has gone on to make 19 appearances so far this year for Everton having left Man United after his contract expired and become an important squad player for Martinez in Merseyside.
While his career at United never really got started due to a series of injuries which halted momentum whenever he had some, Cleverley is clearly enjoying his football at Everton.
“I wouldn’t sell him for any money in the current market,” Martinez said after Everton’s 3-0 win over Newcastle.
“The value that you can give to him… clearly for whatever reason he didn’t fit in another football club, but in another football club, in our football club you can really see the value that he has, the effect he has on other players.
“For me he is one of the most sensational free transfers you are going to see in Premier League history.”
Back when Michael Carrick was injured at the start of the 2011 season, Cleverley and Anderson were our two central midfielders and it was that period of time which I most enjoyed watching Tom play. An awful challenge from Kevin Davies which damaged his ligaments ruined that run of form but prior to that, he looked like a quality little player, so it’s a real shame in that respect.
Letting Cleverley leave United was definitely the right thing to do and it’s good to see him doing well at Everton. After all, he was a product of our academy and spent 15 years with us throughout all age groups and you want to see those players go on to succeed.
