Gary Mabbutt claims Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino will reject Manchester United’s approach

Gary Mabbutt strongly believes Mauricio Pochettino will reject any approach Manchester United make for him this term.

Louis van Gaal has endured a difficult campaign this season with his side trailing behind in fifth, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

Reports indicate Jose Mourinho will take over at Old Trafford and is ‘convinced‘ he’ll replace the Dutchman as manager and speaking about the idea of Pochettino at United, the former Tottenham Hotspur captain feels he would simply reject United if they came calling,

“I am convinced he would turn down any advances from Manchester United or Chelsea,” said Mabbutt.

“I’m sure he sees this squad of players and what is happening at Tottenham on and off the field and realises these are very exciting times for the club.

“Those people saying he might get tempted away, I would say to them when was the last time Totttenham had a very good chance of winning the title?

“Probably 50 years ago. We came third in the league during my time but this side now has that ability to do it, not just this year, but for years to come.”

Through the years, Man United have always been seen as a much bigger club than Spurs due to their consistency in winning silverware, but with Spurs now firmly in the title-race this season, the tables may have turned.

The likes of Dele Alli, Erik Lamela, Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen form the core of a very young, exciting squad that is developing at White Hart Lane and it would be hard to see Pochettino leaving to join a club still seemingly stuck in transition, potentially without Champions League football.

Pochettino remains a candidate to become United’s next boss for many fans but Spurs’ rise could well keep the Argentinian at White Hart Lane, for the time being at least.
