Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and Albert Stuivenberg watch U21s Manchester derby loss in Etihad City

Manchester United’s new Head of Academy Nicky Butt, assistant manager Ryan Giggs and assistant coach Albert Stuivenberg watched the U21s lose 1-0 to Man City on Saturday.

All three were in the crowd at the Etihad and would have been disappointed with an overall performance which saw Warren Joyce’s side dip below their recent excellent form. Thankfully the result hasn’t changed their position in the league and they are still top of the table.

It’s vital for Man United’s coaching staff to watch the U21s in person and particularly for both Giggs and Butt as they will play key roles in bringing those players through to the first-team with recommendations.

United’s U21s have managed to avoid the lulls which the first-team and U18s have suffered this season and that’s a credit to Joyce who has coached them extremely well.

It would be fantastic if we could hold onto our U21s Premier League title at the end of this season. After all, there’s probably not going to be much silverware elsewhere is there?
