Joe Riley makes his Manchester United debut against Shrewsbury

Joe Riley became the 893rd youth player to make his debut for Manchester United by coming off the bench against Shrewsbury Town.

The 19-year-old replaced Cameron Borthwick-Jackson at left-back for the second half.

Riley’s been a very consistent player for our U21s so it was a richly deserved debut and given how little possession Shrewsbury had in our half, it was a very comfortable game for Riley to make his debut.

With United’s injury problems at full-back this season, Riley was drafted into the squad by Louis van Gaal and the way things have continued to go in that position, there’s every chance Riley will get himself some more opportunities as the season continues.

While the opportunity may arise out of an injury crisis, the growth of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson shows how a youngster can take the chance and excel expectations straight away. Here’s hoping Riley can follow in his footsteps if he gets more chances.
