Rashford made a surprise start for Man United after Anthony Martial picked up a hamstring injury in the warm-up against FC Midtjylland on Thursday.
The youngster stole the show and managed to score two goals on his debut to help van Gaal’s side progress further in the Europa League.
However, van Gaal insists he won’t risk playing the youngster against Arsenal.
“No, he [Rashford] shall not play,” van Gaal said.
“He can come off the bench maybe. I cannot risk it. I’m a long-term coach.”
If that’s the case then I presume Anthony Martial is fit to play Arsenal because we don’t have any other strikers who are fit in the squad, and that’s a huge boost to United if the Frenchman is back in action.
With Rashford, it’s now a case of man management from van Gaal. He’s been thrust into the spotlight after a brilliant brace on his debut and there will be a lot of expectation placed on the 18-year-old’s shoulders, so protecting him is important but so is using him – it’s going to be a delicate balancing act.
