Joe Rothwell has been added to Manchester United’s squad for Wednesday night’s game against Watford.
The 21-year-old midfielder has endured a torrid season to date having only made four starts for Man United’s U21s because he was out on loan at Barnsley but returned to the club due to a bout of tonsillitis.
However, Louis van Gaal has clearly seen enough to give Rothwell an opportunity and he becomes the latest in a string of youngsters to experience a match day with United’s first-team.

United’s recent upturn in form has come thanks to the excellent youngsters who have exceeded expectations. Marcus Rashford‘s four goals in his first two appearances have led the way but Guillermo Varela‘s performances at right-back, Timothy Fosu-Mensah‘s debut at left-back plus a host of others have all boosted morale around the squad.
Rothwell’s been a player who, prior to Joshua Harrop’s quick breakthrough, was considered a leader in our U21s midfield and I’ll be excited to see how he gets on if he is given his debut against Watford tonight.
