Louis Saha: Anthony Martial can emulate Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements at Manchester United

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes Anthony Martial can emulate Cristiano Ronaldo’s achievements at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo joined Man United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 and developed into one of the finest players in the world before leaving for Real Madrid in 2009.

United raised eyebrows when they paid an initial £36m for Martial last summer but the Frenchman has endeared himself to fans by scoring 10 goals in all competitions so far this season. Saha believes the 20-year-old has what it takes to match Ronaldo.

“I hope so. I hope Martial can emulate what Ronaldo did at United,” Saha said.

“Ronaldo came when he was 18 and had this little issue where he was not passing the ball. He had to learn and that took him time. When he clicked in his head, with the help of the manager, he became an amazing player and I hope that Martial will go in the same path. Martial has got the ability, strength, he is skilful and he is hungry to learn.”

Since scoring a memorable debut goal against Liverpool at Old Trafford, Martial has gone from strength to strength at United.

He has undoubtedly been one of the side’s best players this term and it’s worrying to think where United would be right now were it not for his efforts. Louis van Gaal has been criticised this season, and rightly so, but he deserves credit for bringing Martial to the club.
