The Manchester Derby: Louis van Gaal’s last chance saloon

Manchester United head into the derby this weekend away at the Etihad for what is Louis van Gaal‘s last chance at making anything of this season.

We’re currently four points behind Manchester City and with a win can close that gap on the top four spots to just one point, leaving everything up for grabs, but a loss would see us drop seven points off with only eight games to go.

That wouldn’t be an unsalvageable gap for Man United in a normal year but this is far from normal and I’d have no belief in us doing it. There’s no chance we’d overcome that gap.

If I was to bet on anything to do with United, I’d go for Martial to score any time 31/10 but Aguero at 57/50 to score any time is probably the safer bet as I can’t see us keeping him out, no matter how good David de Gea is.

United are just so inconsistent this year that you just don’t know what team will turn up at the Etihad. Will it be the side who pushed Arsenal aside 3-2 at Old Trafford or the one which limped to two consecutive, uninspiring defeats against Liverpool? I fear it will be the latter.

Going into the game, United have got everything to lose and nothing to gain and that’s a horrible situation to be in. The players look like they’ve lost so much belief that even beating City wouldn’t completely reinvigorate a top four push.

Here’s hoping we can come away from the Etihad with three points but as United have taught me in recent weeks, it’s the hope that kills you.

888sport are offering treble winnings on the first bet for all new customers – a $10 bet could win you $300 or more if you make the right bet, so get your bets on for the Manchester derby this weekend here.
