Chris Smalling: I wouldn’t want to face Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford

Chris Smalling has admitted that he wouldn’t want to face Marcus Rashford following the 18-year-old’s rise to prominence at Manchester United this season.

Rashford has burst onto the scene at Man United in recent weeks, scoring five goals in eight games since his debut for the club last month.

His most recent strike came in the 1-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday as United secured a crucial three points in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League. Smalling praised Rashford in an interview with MUTV.

“You can see he’s always on the [defender’s] shoulder and I think if I was up against him, he’s one who would certainly put fear in you! He’s done it in the previous games as well, so it’s great for him and great for us,” Smalling said.

“It’s so refreshing to see a young kid who wants to run and keep running. You could see he cramped up [at the end of the game] but that didn’t stop him – he was the man to step up.”

United have a number of established stars in the squad, such as Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

However, it is United’s homegrown contingent who have made the biggest impact in recent months. Rashford, along with the likes of Jesse Lingard, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Timothy Fosu-Mensah, have all ably made the step up to first team affairs and it has been superb to see.
