Rashford has enjoyed a remarkable rise to prominence at Man United in recent weeks, scoring five goals in his last eight games since his debut for the club last month.
His latest strike came in last weekend’s derby against Manchester City as United secured a crucial 1-0 win. Melchiot, who worked with van Gaal in the Dutch national side, was full of praise for Rashford.
“He’s got a lot in his locker already, making it look easy at times,” Melchiot wrote in his blog.
“Van Gaal loves it when he finds young talent, and he always gives the youth a chance. When that talent works hard to get better he rewards them with playing time, so everyone is a winner. This is a common situation for van Gaal, and I hope Marcus capitalises on the opportunity, doesn’t believe the hype and just keeps doing what he did at the weekend.”
A number of youngsters down the years have enjoyed promising starts to their United career only to fade away. Federico Macheda springs to mind.
However, there is a sense that there is something different about Rashford. The 18-year-old has a sensible head on his shoulders and he hasn’t given any indication that he is getting carried away with his success. It is encouraging to see and he can look forward to a bright future.
