Michael Owen believes that Ryan Giggs would leave Manchester United if Jose Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal as manager in the summer.
Mourinho has been strongly linked with a move to Man United, with various rumours last week suggesting that the Portuguese has already signed a pre-contract agreement with the club.
Giggs had previously been touted as van Gaal’s successor but a string of poor performances and results have changed the outlook at Old Trafford.
“The United fans seem to want Mourinho and I still think he is the man they should go and get, but Giggs will probably manage Man United one day and the decision that has to be made is whether that is now,” Owen said.
“I don’t see him hanging around and working as assistant to Mourinho takes over, but it would also be risky to take over United now. He would have a massive job on his hands trying to turn this team around because they require major surgery.”
Giggs is a United legend and it would be fantastic to see him take over and lead the club back to glory.
However, with United in dire straits, they simply can’t afford to gamble on Giggs’ inexperience. Mourinho has his flaws in terms of his character but he has won trophies at every club he has managed and he is much more of a ‘safe bet’ than Giggs.
