Juan Mata: Manchester United’s academy is doing a ‘very good’ job

Juan Mata has praised Manchester United’s academy system following the 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

Mata started the move which led to Man United’s winning goal as Marcus Rashford and Timothy Fosu-Mensah combined to set up Anthony Martial.

Rashford and Fosu-Mensah are both 18 years old while Martial, arguably United’s best player this season, is just 20. Mata believes the club’s academy deserves credit for the way they have developed young players.

“The goal came after a play I was lucky to be involved in, and with three young players taking an active part: Rashford, Fosu-Mensah and Martial,” Mata wrote in his blog.

“This is a good example of what we are trying to build: young guys with a bright present and a bright future ahead who are ready to compete at the highest level. The club’s Academy is doing a very good job and it is bearing fruit.”

United have a long history of promoting youth and this season has been a memorable one in terms of youngsters impressing in the first team.

The results and performances that Louis van Gaal has overseen for large parts of this season have been unacceptable but the veteran coach has earned praise for the way he has gone about placing faith in young players.
