Louis van Gaal: Timothy Fosu-Mensah did fantastically

Louis van Gaal has hailed Timothy Fosu-Mensah after an encouraging performance for Manchester United in their 1-0 victory over Everton.

Fosu-Mensah replaced the disappointing Marcos Rojo at half time following a messy 45 minutes against Gerard Deulofeu and had an instant impact.

The 18-year-old assisted Anthony Martial’s winner just seven minutes after he was substituted onto the pitch and helped the Dutchman’s side close the gap on the teams above them in the Premier League.

Speaking after the game, van Gaal insists Fosu-Mensah deserves credit for his fantastic showing at old Trafford.

He said: “I thought that there was a lot of space on the right wing in the first half, and after Tim took over, he did fantastically. I saw there was some space on the right side and I told Timothy he had to take advantage of that. And when the player does that, it’s a bit of luck for the manager, but every credit is for the player, for Timothy, and not for the manager.”

Fosu-Mensah has taken to first-team football like a duck to water and his performance against Everton was the latest string in his bow. Marcos Rojo was having no success at all down the flank but as soon as Fosu-Mensah came on and attacked down the right, United all of a sudden had a threat on the wing.

Having played at centre-back and full-back in his first three performances for United, Fosu-Mensah’s versatility has shone through and that’s something he has showed at every level since he joined from Ajax.

I’ll keep banging the drum about Fosu-Mensah like I have been for the last 12 months but he’s a really special talent to watch out for and his start at United has already shown glimpses of that.
