Manchester United suffered a dismal late collapse in the 3-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday but the performance of Timothy Fosu-Mensah will give cause for optimism.
Fosu-Mensah was preferred to Matteo Darmian at right-back White Hart Lane and the 18-year-old was excellent in the first half as he denied Harry Kane and then Kyle Walker with two vital blocks.
The youngster had to come off after 68 minutes due to injury and it was no coincidence that United fell apart defensively afterwards with his replacement Matteo Darmian all over the place.
A glance at Fosu-Mensah’s stats tell you everything you need to know: 1 block, 5/5 tackles won, 5 interceptions, 6 clearances and 100% aerial duels won. He has taken to first-team football like a duck to water and looks absolutely ready for it.
The tragic thing is that United looked completely reliant on an 18-year-old defender to hold us together against Spurs but that’s how influential he was at White Hart Lane and is testament to how well he was playing.
United’s current predicament is a depressing one and supporters have been desperately searching for positives in what has been a season to forget. Fosu-Mensah has certainly done his reputation the world of good and fans will look to him to lead a new era at Old Trafford. Hopefully one that is more successful.
