Ashley Fletcher keen to give Jose Mourinho something to think about

Manchester United’s Ashley Fletcher is hopeful that his goalscoring heroics while on loan at Barnsley has given new boss Jose Mourinho “something to smile about” ahead of next season.

Fletcher spent the second half of the 2015/16 season on loan at Barnsley and he scored in the 3-1 win over Millwall at Wembley in the League One play-off final to help earn promotion for his side.

The likes of Marcus Rashford and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have been handed opportunities at Man United in recent months and Fletcher is keen to follow in their footsteps.

“I hope if Jose [Mourinho] was watching the play-off final it might have given him something to smile about,” Fletcher said.

“I’d like to think that some of us youngsters might do a job for him but Manchester United is a huge club and have to spend big money to compete for the Premier League title.”

Mourinho has developed a reputation over the course of his career as a manager who has a tendency to neglect youth but he will be fully aware that he will have to change his ways if he is to succeed at United.

The club’s ethos has always been to promote young players and it was one of the few positives of Louis van Gaal’s reign last season.

Fletcher has certainly proven his goalscoring credentials and he will be hoping to make an impact during United’s pre-season tour of China in the summer.
