Di Marzio: Breel Embolo to join FC Schalke and not Manchester United

Breel Embolo has turned down the chance to join Manchester United and will instead move to Schalke 04, according to reports.

Gianluca di Marzio says the unveiling of Schalke’s new coach Markus Weinzierl, along with new sporting director Christian Heidel, coincides with news that Embolo has opted to move to Germany as opposed to the Premier League.

The 19-year-old was courted by RB Leipzig and Man United before Schalke seemingly hijacked the move with an alleged €20 million bid of their own that will be paid over three instalments. Embolo has been at Basel in Switzerland since he was a youth player but may well have chosen the German outfit over a move to Old Trafford in search of more first-team opportunities.

The youngster made his international debut last year during a 1-1 draw with the United States and has since appeared 13 times for his country including a starting berth during his country’s 0-0 draw with France in their last game during the groups stages of Euro 2016.

He has impressed during his three appearances for the Swiss but seems to lack that cutting edge so evident in older, more experienced strikers. Switzerland have struggled as a whole in an attacking sense and perhaps Embolo is a victim of this but he has certainly looked willing and physically imposing in a red shirt throughout the tournament.

United have reportedly already sealed the signature of Zlatan Ibrahimovic but might still need another No.9 who is willing to sit on the bench and learn the trade behind the Swede. Embolo might feel he is ready to start immediately and believes there is a better chance of regular playing time at Schalke for the time being.
