Manchester United fans thrilled with David de Gea’s impressive performance for Spain

Spain were knocked out of Euro 2016 on Monday night after they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Italy but fans were thrilled with David de Gea‘s impressive performance for Vicente del Bosque’s side.

Although the Spaniard let in two goals, which he wasn’t solely to blame for, De Gea pulled off a number of top drawer saves and stopped Italy from finding the back of the net on multiple occasions.

He was praised earlier on for his stunning stops against Emanuele Giaccherini and Graziano Pelle keeping the Italians at 0-0 early in the first half but after he made another save from a free-kick, Giorgio Chiellini managed to find the back of the net from the rebound to give his side the lead.

Fans on Twitter were delighted with his showing and believed he was the reason Spain had not conceded any more goals.

De Gea had been heavily criticised for his performance as Spain’s 15-game unbeaten in the Euros came to an end on Tuesday night with a 2-1 defeat to Croatia which cost them top spot in Group D, but his performance against Italy was spectacular and was the only reason they didn’t concede more than three goals.

He came to his sides rescue many times but wasn’t able to save them at the end of the day. It was the same story at Old Trafford last season, he saved us plenty of vital points but we weren’t able to salvage a Champions League spot from it, it’s also the reason why he has been voted as United’s Player of the Year award three seasons in a row.

The Spaniard is arguably our best player and now his have been eliminated from the European Championship, he’ll be looking to get his head down and hit the ground running under new boss Jose Mourinho next campaign.
