Paul Scholes is excited by Manchester United’s capture of Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer.
The Swedish striker arrives from Paris Saint-Germain having dominated the French league for several years and aims to team up with Jose Mourinho to rival Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Antonio Conte at Chelsea.
The 34-year-old is not considered the type of signing Sir Alex Ferguson would have approved and it shows Mourinho is not afraid to recruit the biggest personalities in the game.
Scholes, one of the most vocal critics of Louis van Gaal‘s style of play last season, has declared his delight at the signing of Ibrahimovic.
“Ibrahimovic’s signing does excite me yeah,” he said.
“We’re clever enough to know it’s only going to be one or two years but he’s a fit lad and he looks after himself. He’s got great charisma and I think he could pull it off without a shadow of a doubt.”
There have been concerns raised over Ibrahimovic’s age and physical shape but at his medical over the weekend, the former Barcelona striker broke power records at the club. This will allay fears that the 34-year-old is past it and based on his previous form in Ligue 1, we can be assured goals will come from the big man.
Man United have lacked a striker of Ibrahimovic’s ability for the last two years when Robin van Persie began to slow down before leaving the club last season in acrimonious fashion.
The fact that both Mourinho and Ibrahimovic have previously battled with Guardiola during their spells in Spain makes for an exciting Premier League season with plenty of big games to look forward to.
