Pep Guardiola has suggested that Manchester City are in better shape than Manchester United during his unveiling yesterday.
The former Bayern Munich head coach wasted little time in throwing a grenade into the rivalry that will surely escalate as the season get closer.
City finished fourth last season and will need to go through a qualifying round to make it into the Champions League proper ahead of the new season.
He was speaking at the Etihad yesterday as City fans welcome their new manager to the club. “I wasn’t worried. I was coming to Manchester, I was never going to stay at home,” he said.
“But we are not in the Champions League, we have to be clear. That situation is now in this moment better than Manchester United’s, though.”
Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola shared an infamous rivalry while the two were in charge at Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
The pair went their separate ways, however, when Mourinho left Madrid and Guardiola left Barcelona and nobody knew when they would, or if they would ever cross paths again.
They sense was that a Champions League clash was the best we could hope for but now that the two world class managers have been named as United and City’s leaders, we are in for a brand new iteration of their battle.
Pep’s comments will not go unnoticed and you can expect Mourinho to hit back at the earliest possibility and expect fireworks throughout the season from the city of Manchester.
